Spiritual Milestones Number Two - Develop Humility

Develop Humility Introduction
For the last couple of weeks I have been doing a teaching called “Spiritual Milestones”. I have been teaching this topic out of the booklet called, “Spiritual Milestones of Alcoholic Anonymous”. In addition, I have been explaining to my listeners, that Milestones were brick markers set along side of the road, with the emperor of that region name on the marker, letting a traveler know how many miles, they have travel on the kings highway.

If you listen to the archives or read any of the teachings, on this subject that I have taught, on BlogTalkRadio or Talkshoe, then you will know, that I also mention that we are all moving through space and time to a spiritual destination, and we need to have some spiritual milestones in place. After all we are all going into the spiritual realm whether we want to or not, because we are all living in dying bodies. Therefore, whether we want to accept this fact or not, the realities of life in the natural realm of living, is that we are born physically to die, and born again in the spirit to live. Last week we talked about eliminating sin from our lives. Our second, milestone is to “develop humility”.

Many in Alcoholic Anonymous cannot understand the spiritual aspect of A.A. program. However, to be able to understand the spiritual aspect of the program you must understand God, and in order to be able to understand God, you must be born again.

John 3

1. There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2. The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5. Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
9. Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
10. Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
11. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
12. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

You must be born again in order to be able to understand spiritual things; you must be born again in your heart, by the power of the Holy Spirit. However, before I go on, I must explain to you what the word “humility” means, I believe, we will be able to understand what God is saying through His Word, if we know the definition of certain words. Therefore, please be patience with me, while I try to explain to you what this word “humility” and what it means in the natural then what it mean accordingly to the Word of God.

The Little Booklet
In the little booklet called, A.A. Spiritual Milestones the authors of this book says, that the word “humility” is an abstracted in nature, and that humility is hard to pin down. The word “abstract” has four senses. However, we are going to talk about only two of the senses. 1. abstract -- (consider a concept without thinking of a specific example; consider abstractly or theoretically) if I had this viewpoint, it would be hard for me to be able to understand the spiritual aspect A.A. myself.

Therefore, we see that to the unspiritual, humility is an abstract idea, that humility is not something that they believe in because they cannot believe humility is tangible.

First “humility” is having a teachable spirit. It is the willingness to learn. It is keeping an open mind. Second, it is an inner feeling of unworthiness in the sight of God. Then the writer of this little book then speaks about what Paul stated to the church of Corinth.

I Corinthians 15:9-10 King James Version
9. For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

10. But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

In this portion of scriptures, we hear Paul talking about the grace of God bestowed upon him. Therefore, we learn that humility is grace given to us by God. Therefore, again we learn that the Bible considers humility in a person life, as the child of God, having a dependence on God, and who has learn to have respect for others.
